Healthy habits may help prevent cancer
April 8 is celebrated worldwide as World Cancer Day. Institutions, NGOs, Associations and Hospitals meet to raise the awareness on taking preventive measures against the disease.
In support of the initiative, we've brought you 5 important steps that will help you prevent this disease that kills people every year.
1- ENGAGE IN REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Perform at least 30 minutes of light or moderate physical activity per day. In addition to preventing the onset of cancer, it also reduces the risk of diabetes and vascular diseases (heart attack and stroke). Anything counts, as for example walking, doing your house chores, taking the dog for a walk, climbing the stairs, walking to work, among other physical activities.
2 - KEEP YOUR IDEAL WEIGHT
Controlling weight is important as it is associated with various health problems, among them hypertension, diabetes, heart attack and stroke and cancer.
3 - KEEPING A HEALTHY DIET
Eat more fruits, vegetables and less greasy, canned and salty foods. Try to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Choose cooked or baked foods over fried foods.
4 – DO REGULAR CHECK-UPS EXAMS
For some types of cancer, such as the breast, cervix and large intestine (colon), doing periodic check-ups from a certain age, may reduce the risk of death from these diseases. Ask your doctor about these exams.
5 - AVOID OVER-EXPOSURE TO THE SUN
Over-exposure to the sun increases the risk of skin cancer, especially if the exposure occurs unprotected (tents, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen). Avoid overexposing yourself to the sun between 10 am and 6 pm. If you do, be sure to protect yourself.
Prevention is always the best cure. Prevent, always
